After Durban bagged the award of Global Green Model City of 2019, it was the City of Charlotte in North Carolina, USA, that was named the Greenest City in 2020 and 2021.

What’s more fascinating about Charlotte is, it is not just the greenest city in the United States, but it is also the 16th largest city in terms of population!

Some green facts about Charlotte, NC:

  • 16th largest city in the USA

  • It has 47% coverage of the green canopy

  • Approx. 56% of the urban area is covered by trees

  • The best distribution of urban green space in the city is 73%

  • Charlotte takes initiatives in promoting greenness across the community

Team HUGSI got in touch with Mr. Tim Porter, Chief Urban Forester, and Ms. Erin Oliverio, Tree Canopy Program Manager, who played the lead roles in the maintenance of the green infrastructure. Mr. Porter expressed strategic city planning to increase, preserve, and maintain tree canopy to ensure its growth until 2040 with a focused approach. Whereas, Ms. Oliverio provides facts and the status of tree canopy in Charlotte.
